Teenager helps NYCFC finally exorcise Red Bulls demons

New York City FC finally won a derby game for the first time in their history on Sunday, shutting out the slumping Red Bulls 2-0 at Yankee Stadium. And it was teenage rookie Jack Harrison who led the way, scoring the first goal and setting up the second.

The win – their third straight – gave New York City FC 27 points, leapfrogging both the Philadelphia Union and Montreal Impact for first place in the Eastern Conference. It also avenged one of the most embarrassing losses — and trends — in American soccer.

Despite a burgeoning $20 million payroll and star-studded roster that includes captain David Villa, Frank Lampard and Andrea Pirlo, NYCFC was 0-6 in rivalry games against the Red Bulls and Cosmos.
