New York City Football Club needed a win in the worst way, having gone their last seven matches without tasting victory.
The win-starved home club, which had not won since its season opener on March 6 in Chicago, ended the drought Saturday with a spirited 3-2 victory over Vancouver at Yankee Stadium.
The difference was a nifty game-winner by Steven Mendoza, who scored in the 74th minute off a clean left-footed cross from Mix Diskerud. Mendoza, who like Diskerud was a second-half substitute, settled the pass and rocketed it past Vancouver keeper David Ousted.
The Whitecaps, playing in Yankee Stadium for the first time, had just tied the match 2-2 on a penalty-kick rebound by Christian Bolanos in the 64th minute.
