The New Orleans Saints have a difficult situation on their hands. Wil Lutz, their kicker for the last three years, is scheduled to become a restricted free agent in March. That means the Saints have a few options to keep him in the fold: issue a one-year contract tender, or sign him to a multi-year extension. The danger, should they not agree to terms on a long-term deal, is that other teams can poach Lutz — at a price.
Three different tenders are at the Saints’ disposal, tiered at their own values. Estimates from Over The Cap come down as such:
- First round tender: $4,429,000
- Second round tender: $3,110,000
- Original round tender: $2,035,000
Because Lutz entered the league as an undrafted free agent, they would not receive any compensation should they use the lowest-valued option and he leave for another team.
