Saints vs. Buccaneers game recap: Everything we know

A last-second overturned Alvin Kamara touchdown run made this game look more competitive than it really was: the New Orleans Saints nearly ran the Tampa Bay Buccaneers off the field, making Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady look mortal in the process. The Mercedes-Benz Superdome echoed with the roars of a pre-recorded crowd, but the Saints still found enough energy to win 34-23.

Historically slow starters, this is the first time the Saints have won their Week 1 kickoff in back-to-back years (also defeating the Houston Texans in 2019) since the 2009 and 2010 seasons.

While it wasn’t a very productive day on offense (Saints passer Drew Brees completed just 18 of 30 passes for 160 yards, and the Saints gained just 82 yards on the ground) the Saints defense overcame some questionable fouls in coverage and early miscommunications to win the day.
