Alex Hoffman’s decision to retire just weeks after signing an undrafted rookie deal with the New Orleans Saints raised some eyebrows, but the small-school offensive lineman has a higher calling. The Carroll College All-American out of Montana received a $1,000 signing bonus to join the Saints for rookie minicamp, and days later found out that he’d been accepted to the St. Louis University medical school, per the Helena Independent Record. So it sounds like he’s had an eventful couple of weeks.
Hoffman faced long odds of making the team despite his intriguing background. He was the team captain for a bullying line that dominated its level of competition, having arrived at campus as an underweight three-sport high school athlete before packing on almost a hundred pounds of muscle.
