Dannell Ellerbe's tenure will the New Orleans Saints will soon come to an end.
The Saints are placing Ellerbe (foot) on injured reserve after he couldn't pass his physical before training camp, according to a source familiar with the transaction.
The move ends any chance of Ellerbe playing for the Saints in 2017, and the team will waive him once he's healthy, giving him a chance to catch on with another team.
Due to injuries, Ellerbe struggled to live up to expectations even though he was the team's most impactful linebacker when healthy. New Orleans traded wide receiver Kenny Stills to the Miami Dolphins in a deal for Ellerbe in May 2015, but Ellerbe played just 15 total games -- with 12 starts -- during his two seasons with the Saints.
