Saints tinker with roster, release safety Phillips

The Saints are already tinkering with their roster.

After claiming two players on waivers earlier Sunday, the team let go of safety Kenny Phillips, according to a source.

Phillips had been out of football since 2012 because of knee injuries. He initially survived the first two cuts from 90 to 75 players and then 75 to 53.

The Saints also waived undrafted rookie defensive tackle Ashaad Mabry, according to a source. He will be eligible to return to the practice squad if he goes unclaimed on waivers.

New Orleans claimed linebacker Michael Mauti, who was previously with the Minnesota Vikings, and defensive end Obum Gwacham, who was with the Seahawks.
