When Saints fans, eager to take on the part of the draft where they’d actually see some activity, got to their sixth-round pick and saw their team with a center and two safeties to show for all the intense pre-draft work of the last few months, they were puzzled. Yet here they were, pick 177 fresh off the board. With their pick, the Saints had selected Saquan Hampton, safety, Rutgers.
This certainly wasn’t the draft they’d been prepping for. They’d been told that the Saints didn’t need a safety for starters. That was causing a little confusion since the team seemed to be going safety crazy all of a sudden.
