Panthers waive ex-Saints draft pick Tommy Stevens

The Carolina Panthers announced Tuesday evening that they waived quarterback/tight end Tommy Stevens to open a roster spot for wide receiver C.J. Saunders, which was officially processed on Wednesday’s update to the league transactions wire. Now the former Penn State and Mississippi State quarterback is seeking a new NFL opportunity.

His pro career began in New Orleans, where Stevens was the subject of a contentious joust between the Panthers and the New Orleans Saints. He and his agent had already worked out an undrafted rookie contract with Carolina, where he would be reunited with his old coach Joe Brady; not to be outdone, Sean Payton engineered a last-minute trade to ensure Stevens landed with the Saints.
