This is not a case of sour grapes from a Chiefs fan with a platform. The results of the overtime period between the Chiefs and Patriots were how the Chiefs lost the AFC championship game, but it certainly wasn’t why the Chiefs lost.
The results do, however, highlight the failures of the NFL’s overtime structure relative to where the league is today.
So how does NFL overtime work? In the regular season teams play a single 10-minute period. Each team has a chance to possess the ball unless a touchdown or safety is scored. At the end of that 10-minute period if there is no winner, the game is a tie.
