The New Orleans Saints have begun releasing players in their race to Saturday’s roster cuts deadline (3:00 p.m. CT), a painful process where the 90-man offseason roster is reduced to just 53 players. It promises to be a busy weekend for the Saints and every other NFL team as they not only waive their own, but consider whether to submit waiver wire claims on the 1,100-plus players who will be cut.
With other wrinkles at play such as injured reserve designations and salary cap navigation (veteran players’ salaries are guaranteed if they make the initial 53-man roster, so teams will waive them before re-signing them days later) ahead, not to mention practice squad recruitment, there are going to be a number of transactions to record in the days ahead.
