The New Orleans Saints waived defensive lineman Mitchell Loewen on Dec. 27, but he wasn’t on the street for long. Loewen was claimed on waivers by the Detroit Lions, who have struggled to field a competitive defensive line all year long. Their corresponding move was placing nose tackle A’Shawn Robinson onto their injured reserve list.
Loewen earned a spot on the Saints’ opening roster each of the last two years, but was lost to an early-season injury in 2017 and rarely played in 2018 with so many other options at the position. He mainly played defensive end behind Cameron Jordan but occasionally moved inside to a defensive tackle alignment.
