“While Dave was at Notre Dame, we ran up our parents phone bills and his father and my father contacted each other to put an end to it and we were limited to one call a week for a limited amount of time. That was too much for us to go to bed without some sort of communication so we came up with “I love you rings” and either he or I would call and ring one time and hang up. And the other would do the same back. It became a tradition that we never stopped even after we could afford to talk and beyond.
