Joe McKnight had just completed his first season in the Canadian Football League before his shooting death Thursday in Terrytown.
The shooting occurred during an argument at an intersection, according to a witness.
He played in seven games for two teams over the span of the season, first with the Edmonton Eskimos and then with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
Both teams and the league commissioner all issued statements in response to McKnight's death.
"We are shocked to hear the news of Joe's sudden passing," stated Roughriders coach Chris Jones. "We send our deepest sympathies to Joe's family, friends, and all those impacted by this tragedy.
