Democrats say they will drop a decades-long policy on withholding financial support to candidates who oppose abortion, a clear acknowledgment that the party has alienated voters who have put Republicans in control of Congress and Donald Trump in the White House.

Rep. Ben Ray Lujan, D-N.M., the chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, told the Hill that the committee would reverse a policy that has strictly enforced a near absolutist pro-abortion rights ideology on the candidates it supports.

"There is not a litmus test for Democratic candidates," Lujan said. "As we look at candidates across the country, you need to make sure you have candidates that fit the district, that can win in these districts across America.
