Jake Stoneburner's telephone rang and on the other end was Dan Campbell, who serves as the New Orleans Saints assistant head coach/tight ends.
Tight end Josh Hill's ankle injury suffered in Week 1 prompted the call, but there is also a connection between Campbell and Stoneburner from their time together with the Miami Dolphins.
Campbell had one simple question for Stoneburner, who was then a free agent after the Los Angeles Rams released the tight end in late August.
"He called me up and was like, 'Want to work out?'" Stoneburner said.
The 6-3, 261-pound Stoneburner jumped at the invitation and worked out Monday before signing a practice-squad contract, which offered the chance to reunite with a coach he holds in high regard.
