In April 2015 Orleans Parish District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro dismissed concerns that Darren Sharper, a defensive standout for the New Orleans Saints' Super-Bowl-winning team, got a sweetheart deal after he admitted to being a serial rapist. "I certainly don't think serving 10 years in jail is a slap on the wrist," Cannizzaro said then. "I think that's a significant sentence."
Sharper had pleaded guilty to a continental raping spree. He had been implicated in drugging and raping nine women in four states, and the plea deal was worked out with the relevant state prosecutors and the federal government.
