New Orleans criminal court Judge Camille Buras on Wednesday (April 19) will convene the most closely watched sentence hearing of her career, determining the punishment to be imposed upon Cardell Hayes, the convicted killer of former Saints defensive star Will Smith.
District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro wants to see Hayes, 29, imprisoned for the maximum 60 years, expressing no sympathy for the man a jury found guilty of shooting a young mother in the legs and then killing her husband with eight more gunshots - seven to his back - during their infamous road-rage confrontation in the Lower Garden District on the night of April 9, 2016.
