Backup QB battle takes turn

The battle for the Saints’ backup quarterback job took a surprising turn against Houston.

Drew Brees only got one series, Luke McCown played the rest of the first half and rookie Garrett Grayson played almost the entire second half, leaving Ryan Griffin only 42 seconds.

Griffin may get more time on Thursday in the Saints’ preseason finale against Green Bay.

“When you’re trying to play a bunch, generally, it’s more difficult,” Saints coach Sean Payton said. “He’ll play more in this game coming up Thursday.”

McCown completed 8-of-14 passes for 117 yards, Grayson completed 7-of-8 throws for 96 yards and Griffin finished 1-of-3 for 12 yards, ending the game by tossing the Saints’ first interception of the preseason to Jumal Rolle.
