With the recent promotion of Dennis Allen, formerly a defensive coordinator, to the position of a head coach, the New Orleans Saints made two current promotions on Wednesday. These promotions include Ryan Nielsen and Kris Richard to the roles of co-defensive coordinators. All three, Nielsen, Richard, and Allen, worked under the position of Sean Payton, the former head coach.
In the new turn of events, Richard will keep his position as the team's secondary coach, while Nielsen will now hold the role of the defensive line coach with a boost to co-defensive coordinators respectively in their titles.

Nielsen and Richard's career details
Both being 42 years old now, Nielsen and Richard aren’t teaming up for the first time now. They played together once already for the USC’s defense when they were in college. Between 1998 and 2001, Richard was part of the Trojans, and Nielsen was part of the program between 1997 and 2001.
Nielsen's career as a coach for the NFL began in 2017 when he started coaching the Saints, holding the position of a D-line coach. Richard first began his NFL career as an assistant defensive backs coach in 2010 for the Seattle Seahawks. In 2017, he became the defensive backs coach for the Dallas Cowboys. Later from 2018 to 2019, he was the passing game coordinator.
For the New Orleans Saints, the defense in 2021 rose to the strength of a 9 to 8 squad and finished the year by ranking number four in the NFL by the number of points and the number seven in yards. With the new turn of events of Nielsen’s and Richard’s promotions, we may only expect these rankings to rise with the New Orleans Saints’ team revival in the upcoming championship.
