ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Talk about spread offenses, the zone read, etc., all you want. Most football coaches still will tell you the game, at its core, is all about blocking and tackling.
During coach Bob Davie’s first three seasons at the University of New Mexico, the Lobos were pretty good at the former but not so good at the latter.
Throughout the month of August, then, Davie, defensive coordinator Kevin Cosgrove and their defensive staff conducted tackling drill after tackling drill. Those skills needed to improve, not just a little but a lot, if the Lobos were to reach their 2015 goal of six victories and a bowl bid.
