ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Ben Hilgart, the University of New Mexico’s director of athletic performance the past four years, has accepted a job at Virginia Tech.
Hilgart, who worked primarily with the football program at UNM, will have similar duties as the associate athletic director for strength and conditioning at Virginia Tech. The school recently hired Justin Fuente from Memphis as its new football coach, replacing the legendary Frank Beamer.
Among Lobos football coach Bob Davie’s first acts after taking the UNM job in November 2011 was the hiring of Hilgart to head his strength-and-conditioning program. Hilgart had worked the previous seven years at Arizona State.
