ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Field conditions were less than ideal but Friday night’s game at Santa Ana Star Field played out like a first-place showdown.
Paced by junior left-hander Carson Schneider, the University of New Mexico baseball team drew first blood in its pivotal Mountain West series against Fresno State. Schneider worked 81/3 strong innings as the Lobos edged the Bulldogs 2-1 in the opener of a three-game set.
The win moved UNM (21-9, 10-3) into sole possession of first place by one game over Fresno State (21-10, 9-4), and the Lobos raced onto the field for postgame handshakes after the final out.
