Troy Reffett, a 33-year coaching veteran with eight years of experience in the ins and outs of Rocky Long’s 3-3-5 defense, on Thursday was named to replace Long as the University of New Mexico’s defensive coordinator.
Reffett, 55, had been UNM’s cornerbacks coach the past three years under head coach Danny Gonzales while Long was Gonzales’ defensive coordinator. Long, a former head coach at UNM and San Diego State, resigned last month to become the D-coordinator at Syracuse.
Reffett “has a tremendous track record of success,” Gonzales said in a news release, “and he will be able to continue the coaching scheme that has proven to be successful for us over the past few years.
