ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — While the madness of March rolls on to the Final Four, the University of New Mexico men’s and women’s basketball teams have made this clear: Their future postseason plans no longer entail cutting a check just to keep playing.
Lobo men’s head coach Craig Neal last week shed some light on why he feels that’s the right decision during his first interview with the Journal since the men’s team’s season ended and UNM made an about-face on its initial intention to play in the College Basketball Invitational (CBI).
“I just think the kids come here, and our program’s at a state where that if you don’t get invited to the NIT and you don’t play in the NCAA Tournament … we’re just not going to play in something you buy into,” Neal said.
