Rugby-style tackling isn’t likely to turn Lobos into Seahawks or Buckeyes.
Still, UNM defensive players and coaches believe the change in tackling form they’ve adopted will at least point them in that direction.
Lobos coach Bob Davie said the team began implementing rugby tackling when fall camp began exactly a month ago.
“It’s not as dramatic (a change) as you think,” Davie said. “It’s really just simply tackling lower and eliminating the helmet and the face from it as much as you can. But really, wrapping and tackling lower is the No. 1 thing.”
Near the line of scrimmage, Davie said, not much will change.
