The New Mexico women’s cross-country team now bears the burden of a lofty expectation to go with its exciting talent.
The preseason coaches poll released Tuesday has the Lobos ranked No. 2 nationally, behind only Iowa State. And even then, coach Joe Franklin’s squad received eight of 12 possible first-place votes.
“We know the women’s team is potentially a very deep group,” New Mexico head coach Joe Franklin said. “The goal is always to be a top-10 team in the preseason rankings and we’re continuing that.”
Leading the Lobo women are Alice Wright and Calli Thackery, both of whom placed top-50 at last year’s NCAAs, where New Mexico finished third.
