ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Sometimes a swift kick in the pants serves a purpose.
Four days after receiving such a kick, the UNM women’s basketball team came out energized and determined Saturday in an entertaining 84-71 victory at the Pit over Sacramento State.
Khadijah Shumpert posted a double-double (21 points, 10 rebounds) and was one of four Lobos to score 13 points or more as the Lobos (2-1) shook off a lackluster performance at New Mexico State and out-battled an unorthodox, high-energy Hornets team.
Sacramento State (1-2) fired up 47 — count ’em if you can — 3-point attempts, subbed in five-player platoons every few minutes and pressed on every dead ball throughout the game.
