LOS ANGELES — The University of New Mexico men’s soccer team was far from overmatched against No. 1 UCLA on Saturday, but the visiting Lobos could not crack the Bruins’ defense in a season-opening 1-0 defeat.
Malcolm Jones scored the lone goal off a rebound in the 62nd minutes for the Bruins, who outshot UNM 15-8 overall and 11-2 in the second half.
“We’re leaving with a little bit of an empty feeling,” UNM coach Jeremy Fishbein said. “We played a really talented team but we gave ourselves chances to win the game. When you play teams of that caliber, especially on the road, you only get a few chances.
