The only surprise regarding Carlos Wiggins’ selection Monday as the Mountain West Conference special teams player of the week was that it hadn’t happened before.
The UNM senior wide receiver’s return of a Hawaii kickoff for a touchdown last Saturday, after all, was the fifth kick he’d brought back for a TD during his career. Wiggins already held the Mountain West record in that category, at four, before adding No. 5.
The real question, though, is this. Can Wiggins, or any other UNM receiver, ever become the Mountain West’s offensive player of the week?
That’s a slippery slope for any receiver, since quarterbacks usually get the credit when a receiver gets a lot of catches for a lot of yards and a lot of touchdowns.
