No more divisions. Guaranteed opponents. Rotational scheduling.
The Mountain West released the 2023 football schedule on Wednesday afternoon, the next step in a new era of determining opponents.
The first leg of a three-year schedule rotation after the conference moved to eliminate divisions in May 2022, teams will now play two opponents annually and alternate through six others through the duration of the arrangement. The Lobos are now guaranteed to play San Jose State and Boise State every season over the course of the rotation.
Head coach Danny Gonzales, whose team is coming off a 2-10 2022 season, said the pairings made sense in the larger context of other groupings but noted how there’s not much of a historical or geographical rivalry between the Lobos and Spartans.
