ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – In the decade-plus under head coach Joe Franklin, both the men's and women's track and field programs have been some of the most successful teams not only at the University of New Mexico, but also on the national stage. That is a very powerful statement when you consider the sport of track and field itself is arguably the most unique in all of collegiate athletics.
With a combination of an indoor and outdoor season, there are over 80 different events across both men's and women's track and field. Factor in event specialties such as pole vaulting, jumps, throws, sprints and distance running, you essentially have several "mini-teams" within a given track and field team.
