Lack of a second reliable scorer has doomed Lobo women

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Khadijah Shumpert’s potential game-winner rolled off the rim as the final buzzer sounded. Had her shot gone in, this would have been a different column.

But, though an upset victory Wednesday night over runaway Mountain West Conference leader Colorado State would have changed this morning’s topic, it wouldn’t have changed this salient point regarding the 2015-16 University of New Mexico basketball team.

The Lobos need another scorer.

Is it too late to find another year of eligibility for Antiesha Brown, who last year led UNM to a surprising, 21-win season? Yes.

Is it possible to clone sophomore Cherise Beynon, whose 23 points were just short of half the Lobos’ total in a 49-48 loss to the Rams?
