Gonzales: UNM offense not performing on a level equal to its talent

In football, as in other team sports, talent plus performance equals success.

Halfway through his University of New Mexico football team’s 2022 season, head coach Danny Gonzales concluded that the Lobos’ offense has not performed on a level equal to its talent.

That conclusion, he said at a Monday news conference, prompted his decision the day before to fire offensive coordinator Derek Warehime.

Gonzales named Heath Ridenour, a hugely successful high school head coach but hired only nine months ago as UNM’s quarterbacks coach, as his interim offensive coordinator.

“Derek will be fine,” Gonzales said.
