SAN MARCOS, Texas — Former New Mexico football coach Dennis Franchione is retiring after a 30-year head coaching career with stops at TCU, Alabama, Texas A&M and Texas State.
Franchione, 64, has led Texas State for seven seasons. He posted a 213-135-2 career record and guided his teams to nine conference championships, nine bowl games, four NAIA playoff games and one NCAA Division II playoff.
Franchione coached the Lobos from 1992-97, leading them to the ’97 Insight.com Bowl in Tucson. UNM lost to Arizona 20-14 in what would be Franchione’s final game at UNM. It was the first bowl game for New Mexico since the 1961 Aviation Bowl.
