Cross-country: No. 1 Lobos are just fine with second-place finish

No. 1 in the country. But No. 2 on Friday.

Does it matter?

“We look at it as, we lost by a point not running all out and not running everyone,” University of New Mexico senior Courtney Frerichs said.

Indeed, the Lobos, who came into the NCAA Mountain Regional Championships as the top-ranked women’s cross-country team in the nation, saw their undefeated season end on Friday at the UNM North Golf Course.

Second-ranked Colorado edged the Lobos, 49-50, although both automatically qualified for next weekend’s NCAA Championships in Louisville, Ky.

“That was the goal,” UNM coach Joe Franklin said.
