College football: ‘Magic Hands’ grateful for chance at UNM

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — On the University of New Mexico football practice fields, they call Chris Davis “Magic Hands.”

Throw Davis the ball, and he’s almost certain to catch it – something he did an even 200 times during his four years as a wide receiver at Oaks Christian High School in Westlake Village, Calif. As a senior, he caught 88 passes for 1,606 yards and 20 touchdowns.

So, how did such a prolific receiver wind up at UNM, in one of the most run-oriented offensive schemes in the nation? That’s easily explained.

At a height of 5 feet, 6 inches, Davis was easy to overlook by college recruiters.
