A strong territorial effort by the United States came undone in the final minute.
Team USA outshot Germany, 33-14, in their IIHF World Championship preliminary-round matchup on Sunday, but surrendered the go-ahead goal with 33 seconds to go regulation. The end result was a 3-2 loss for the U.S. in St. Petersburg.
Korbinian Holzer (Anaheim Ducks) broke a 2-2 stalemate at 19:27 of the third period, lifting the Germans to victory. Thomas Greiss (NY Islanders) stopped 31 for Germany.
"It was a hard fought game by both teams," coach John Hynes told USA Hockey’s official website.
