The Memorial Cup run has ended for John Quenneville and the Brandon Wheat Kings.
The WHL champions fell in overtime, 2-1, to the host Red Deer Rebels on Wednesday, missing out on a shot at their first-ever Memorial Cup crown.
Tim McGauley scored the lone goal for the Wheat Kings, who were facing elimination for the first time this season. Red Deer’s Evan Polei notched the winner at 3:50 of the extra session for former Devils coach Brent Sutter’s squad, which advanced to the semifinal against QMJHL champs Rouyn-Noranda.
Though Quenneville won’t be moving on, the Devils’ 2014 first-rounder authored one of the most memorable moments in Memorial Cup history with the between-the-legs goal he scored in Brandon’s opener against the Huskies.
