The sentiment is so deeply ingrained in Bazzana's homeland that it's got a name: tall poppy syndrome, after farmers' habit of cutting down the largest flowers in a field so they don't stand out.
None of it made much sense to him. Bazzana, listed at 6-foot but probably a tick shorter, was never the most imposing athlete on any given field.
