Stefan Matteau will not participate for the U.S. in this year’s world championships.
USA Hockey announced Friday that Matteau was injured in Team USA’s exhibition game against Austria on Tuesday, and has returned home. He was named to the team on April 20.
The U.S. opened the preliminary round on Friday vs. Tuomo Ruutu and Team Finland.
Matteau was bidding to make his worlds debut. The Devils’ 2012 first-round pick last saw international action at the 2014 world juniors in Sweden. He collected four points (3g-1a) in five games for the United States, which finished fifth.
