Arguably the best general manager in the history of New York-area sports is gone.
Lou Lamoriello, who transformed the Devils from irrelevant to regal, resigned his post as team president Thursday to take the job as the general manager of the Maple Leafs.
The shocking move came just over two months after he gave up the position of New Jersey’s GM and hired Ray Shero as a replacement.
“Lou Lamoriello created and defined what it meant to be a New Jersey Devil,” co-owner Josh Harris said in a statement.
Since leaving Providence College in 1987, Lamoriello took over the Devils and led them to three Stanley Cup championships, five Eastern Conference titles and nine Atlantic Division crowns.
