Gavrus, Belarus reach quarters at world championships

Artur Gavrus and Belarus are through to the quarterfinals of the IIHF World Championship in the Czech Republic.

The Belarusians punched their ticket to the next round with a 3-2 win over Norway in Tuesday’s Group B action at CEZ Arena in Ostrava. They now head to Prague to take on Canada, which won Group A.

Belarus (4-0-2-1, 14 pts) struck three times on the power play for a 3-0 lead before holding off a Norwegian rally. They finished fourth in Group B to reach the quarters for the second straight season.

Gavrus, the Devils’ sixth-round pick in 2012, finished fourth for Belarus in preliminary-round scoring with five points (2g-3a) in seven games, and tied for the team lead in shots on goal with 17.
