The final active player from the Devils' 2003 Stanley Cup championship team has called it a career.
Forward Brian Gionta announced his retirement on Monday after 16 NHL seasons for four NHL teams. Over 1,026 career games, Gionta posted 291 goals and 304 assists for 595 points.
Gionta, who did not start the 2017-18 season with an NHL club, captained the 2018 U.S. Olympic team before joining the Boston Bruins for 20 games to end the regular season, plus one more in the playoffs.
After being the 82nd overall pick of the 1998 NHL Draft by the Devils, Gionta turned pro following four years at Boston College.
