The Devils traded Paul Thompson and Graham Black to the Florida Panthers in exchange for Marc Savard and a second-round pick in the 2018 NHL Draft, the team announced Friday.
Savard has not played in a game since 2011 after battling concussion issues. The 37-year-old is entering the final season of a seven-year, $28 million contract in 2016-17. The Panthers traded for Savard last summer, helping the Boston Bruins clear cap space. He is owed $575,000 in 2016-17, but comes with a cap hit just over $4 million.
Thompson, a 27-year-old left wing, played three games for Devils last season, but spent the majority of the season in Albany, where he finished with 13 goals and 22 assists in 56 games.
