NEW YORK -- Penalties are typically higher in the NHL preseason. Thursday's game between the Devils and Islanders may have taken that to a new level.
Referees called 17 total penalties, including 11 against the Devils with 10 minors. Those minors led to eight Islander power plays and two goals, which were the difference in a 2-0 win over the Devils at Barclays Center.
Despite the Devils racking up a 14-7 shot advantage in the first period, a couple late penalties burned them late in the opening frame. Following a Pavel Zacha tripping penalty, Blake Coleman went to the box for hooking.
