After right wing Michael Cammalleri scored to push the shootout to a fourth round, the Devils turned to defenseman Damon Severson as the next shooter. Coach John Hynes explained the decision.
"When you look at our team, these are not random when you pick shootout players. You have players that we do full research," he said. "When you down the ladder on our shootout list, we have guys that practice it, we work on it. Damon is a guy, he's got skill, he feels comfortable doing it, he's done a nice job in practice when he's gone through it.
