The search for A.J. Soares’ replacement has taken a new turn.
According to Revolution Writer and Editor Jeff Lemieux, center back Oguchi Onyewu—a mainstay during the United States’ 2006 and 2010 World Cup cycles—is training with the Revolution ahead of Sunday’s showdown with the Colorado Rapids. Still in the playoff hunt, the Revs desperately need defensive support, having conceded more goals than any team in MLS this season (47) while accruing a league-worst -18 goal differential.
Still, the decision to kick the tires on Onyewu comes as a surprise. The strong, physical center back last played for British side Charlton Athletic in 2015.
