What hiring Jerod Mayo as head coach means for the Patriots

Team owner Robert Kraft promised a quick search to find the New England Patriots’ next head coach, and he did not lie. Less than 24 hours after the team and Bill Belichick announced its mutual parting of the ways, Jerod Mayo has been hired to succeed the future Hall of Famer.

Mayo, 37, has spent his entire NFL life in New England. A former linebacker, he was drafted in the first round by Belichick in 2008 and went on to appear in a combined 111 regular season and playoff games for the organization. Three years into his retirement, in 2019, the one-time Super Bowl winner rejoined the club as an assistant coach.
