Vikings rookie QB J.J. McCarthy out for season after undergoing knee surgery

Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy will miss the remainder of the 2024 season after undergoing knee surgery recently, head coach Kevin O’Connell announced on Wednesday.

One of six quarterbacks selected in the first round back in April — a group also including the New England Patriots’ Drake Maye at No. 3 overall — McCarthy joined the Vikings as the 10th overall selection in this year’s draft. The Michigan product spent the early portions of training camp in a competition for the team’s starting position with veteran Sam Darnold.

McCarthy had a realistic chance of coming out ahead, but struggled with what was initially reported as knee soreness after the preseason opener.
